I would disagree, it's genius that he persuaded YOU that it was not
a setup but a real trick. By you I don't mean you especially, I
refer to the viewers who assume that everything that DB says or
offers as an explanation must be the truth. ("I memorized the entire
phone book" from the live show springs to mind, hohohho).
Think about it this way, when Blaine first floated onto our screens
people were truly amazed and felt that the audiences reactions were
genuine and justified. A few "Learn Blaines secret's" ebooks later
and we realise that the audience members are either stooges or
reshot and that Blaine is far from astounding.
Repackage the Blaine idea for an "English" mentality and
presenation and you have Derren...An actor/magican (Mactor?,
acgician?) like Blaine but aimed at people with a slightly higher IQ
than the average American.
David Copperfield didn't really walk through the Great Wall of China.
Derren Brown didn't really influence the media guys using
schoolkids, messages written in dirt and other subliminal pointers.
That doesn't detract from the overall entertainment value, and
remember, Derren is not a mystic but an entertainer.
