I think the beauty of his material is that knowing something (or thinking you
know something) of the workings behind it make it all the more remarkable,
elevating it above the 'pure trickery' plane into something more cerebral. You
start to think along the lines of "Even though I know how it's done, there's no
way *I* could do it to such a high degree..."

He did seem rather gaunt, but I fancy this has a lot to do with the lighting
and slightly unusual camera angle. He was never that pudgy to start with ;-)
