This is an e-Mail I received from a Mentalst
(Mind magician).
What does everyone think of his
views? :-
The 'Mind Control' shows are superb.
It's just a crying shame that some
people see the
shows and are misled into thinking that if they sign up
for
expensive courses in NLP (neuro-linguistic
programming) and similar
subjects, they will be able to do
what Derren does. Don't confuse the method
with
the presentation!

Remember what you see
on TV is edited heavily, alot of people think David
Blain can levitate, because of the success his tv show,
when all he did was
combine a basic trick with a
middle film edit before jigsawing it all
together.
Mentalism is 10% tricks and 90% presentation, Derren
usually shows one miss,
such as the forgetting stop
address on the train, and the boxers lifting the
girl, he shows one miss, but because of the nature of
his tricks! there will
be lots more, you just do
not see them.
The secret of a good joke is
adapt an existing one and modernise it, the
secret
of mentalism is taking a basic trick or magic or
mentalism and making
it your own, the card table at the
working mens club included some regular
card tricks
but DB made them look like mind control.
The
book by Ian Rowland is recomended by DB in his first
book "Pure Effect"
and is also recommended by him
on one of the online mentalist boards.
Also
DB is a practising hypnotist and uses waking
suggestion alot, but who
knows out of the others on the
show, who was hypnotised ? I could hypnotise
you
then ask you if you were hypnotised and you would
reply no! so when DB
asks them it means nothing as
they show is a Mind control one afterall!!!
not
card tricks, not hypnotism, but mind control, but as
everyone knows, its
not possible to read minds, it is
possible to do psychological illusions
though.
Get a copy of Ians book, the next edition is due in
late march I believe.
After reading it you will
amaze your friends and colleagues, who will think
you are on a one to one with God.
The coin
trick is a basic once, I recommend the Karl Fulves book
on self
working mental magic, it gives the basic
secret of the coin trick, however
when you read it,
watch DB again and see how he made the trick his own!
