Wise, Michael (b ?Salisbury, c1647 - d Salisbury, 24 August, 1687)
Wise was organist and instructor of the choristers at Salisbury Cathedral from 1668, but often neglected his duties there after becoming a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal (where he had previously sung as a boy) in 1676. Shortly before his was killed by a night watchman in 1687, he had been appointed Master of the Choristers at St Paul's Cathedral. He composed mainly services, and verse anthems with organ, which feature many melodic solos, and ensembles for treble voices and show unusual qualities of pathos and expression.
