Stainer, Sir John (b London, 6 June, 1840 - d Verona, 31 March, 1901)

After holding positions at St Michael's College, Tenbury, and Oxford University, he became organist at St Paul's Cathedral (1872-88), reforming the musical service there, increasing the number of musicians and expanding the repertory. He soon became a prominent church musician, scholar, and composer helping to found the Musical Association, and becoming professor at Oxford University. He was knighted in 1888.

As a scholar, he made editions of music before Palestrina and Tallis in 1901. The Crucifixion, written in 1887, is still one of his best known works.
