Jackson, Francis Alan (b Malton, 2 October, 1917)
Jackson was a chorister at York Minster under Edward Bairstow, and then studied at Durham University. Between 1933 and 1940 he was organist of Malton Parish Church, and in 1946 he succeeded Bairstow as Organist and Master of the Music at York Minster, a post which he held until his retirement in 1982. In 1978 he was awarded the OBE, and since retiring from York he has remained active as a recitalist and composer.
