Handl [Gallus], Jacob [Jacobus] (b probably Ribnica, 15 April - 31 July, 1550 - d Prague, 18 July, 1591)
Handl lived in Austria from around 1565 and in 1574/5 he sang in the Vienna Hofkapelle under Monte. After extensive travelling, he became choirmaster to the Bishop of Olomouc from c.1579 to 1585, and Kantor of St Jan na Brzehu, Prague from c.1586 - 1591. In his collection of published music he uses Italian and Netherlands techniques with skilful use of counterpoint. Many of his polychoral pieces illustrate the influence of Willaert and Lassus.
