England in the Nineteenth Century

1 What impact did urbanisation have on people's lives in nineteenth century England? A-
Planning and organisation of material:
Well planned and tightly executed.

Use of sources:
An over-reliance on Briggs, but otherwise impeccable.

Analysis:
Cogent and clearly thought out.

Presentation:
Very good.

Overall comments:
This is confident, clear writing with few faults. Well done.
2 Show how any two of the relationships portrayed in Middlemarch illustrate the balance of power between men and women. A
Planning and organisation of material:
This is a well planned essay which clearly develops the theme of interation between your chosen couples. ou could have widened it to show how they illustrate the general situation - i.e. Dorothea's religious ideals common at the time added to her subservience.

Use of sources:
You show a pleasing range of critical reading and your quotations are well chosen.

Analysis:
Your precise analysis of your couples is very good. In general terms you could have added the ideals of feminine dependence and male responsibility more obviously although these ideas are implicit in what you have written.

Presentation:
Excellent.

Overall comments:
This is a promising piece of work. I liked your application of the 'horsemanship theme' as illustrative material.
3 To what extent was the practice of art in nineteenth century England shaped by patriarchal ideology? B+
Planning and organisation of material:
This is generally well planned, although the definition of 'patriarchy' might have been more useful in the paragraph one and the discussion of Tissot's elegant figures might have been located earlier in the section (before that of 'working women' and 'fallen women'?)

Use of sources:
Sources are used appropriately, but the conventional format for in-text references (Harvard System) is: (Wood, 1976:135). References should always follow, not precede, quotations (p.1)

Analysis:
This is a very good essay with relevant themes set out and argued through. It's not clear what 'social construct' refers to in the first sentence - 'dominant ideology' might have been a better phrase to employ in this context?

Presentation:
This is fine, but some very minor linguistic amendments have been suggested and the referencing format has been corrected.

Overall comments:
This is a very good essay showing evidence of understanding of course work, and of fuller reading. Take care with the small details of expressions and referencing.
4 'Man to command, and woman to obey', according to the father in Tennyson's The Princess (1847). Drawing on your reading of Middlemarch and your study of the history and art of the nineteenth centry, discuss whether this present an adequate picture of gender roles within Victorian society (with consideration to work, religion, domestic life, and class). A-
Planning and organisation of material:
This is a truly interdisciplinary essay with good references to historical, literary, and artistic sources. I like its balance and clear definition of the various areas considered.

Use of sources:
This is a well documented essay.

Analysis:
This is a pleasing essay in that is discussed various aspects of Victorian life rather than presenting a one sided view. It would be improved by some reference to the [...] spear headed by women like Florence Nightingale, Emily Davis even Miss Burns and Miss Beale.

Presentation:

Overall comments:
If you have time try to do some general reading around the subject of Victorian life. This will give you a broader viewpoint.
